Wally Nearly Sweeps Veggy Events?!
Scores Hat Trick: Dominates Codgers Seniors, HALF Pickle, HALF Pairs
Plaza Downtown
Gilly was already in town, winning big at the slots when Scooter, Freck, Vinny, Derfy, Travy, Griggy, Tommy, Hazzy, Narke & Wally made their presence known.
Typical 1st night hanging out, gaming, enjoying The Plaza outside carousel bar & eating pooh emoji donuts from Pinkbox. Gilly’s suite could have accommodated everyone and we just might all bunk there for next year’s Veggy.
Thursday morning, 11 of the finest headed to Lake Mead. Perfect weather and water conditions for a day on the patio pontoon boat. Inflatable toys, including Shamu, water lacrosse, footballs, backgammon, euchre, food, whiskey Glo’s and music were enjoyed by all. Hazzy was a great chef serving brats, dogs & burgers.
Nobody was able to catch 2 footballs on the waterslide, Hoffman took advantage of Wheeling’s sunstroke and eeked out a few backgammon/euchre victories.
That evening, we all watched TNF (on our cell phones) and enjoyed hanging out together in Gilly’s suite.
Friday morning, Red, Ronny & Scotty joined us for a total of 14 members. The shirt unveiling ceremony included “Veggy 4 Vets” hats from EC Big Guy and mini golf bags/coolers from CEO Wally with our Veggy motto, Life is Precious, STWFWYC. A saying about “Attitude” from Charles Swindoll, Veteran & Pastor, was handed out to all members.
We also toasted Whiskey Glo shots in honor of Gloria Wilson.
Both the shirts and mini golf bags honored a founding member of the Veggy Open. Lasagna queen, a most unselfish/giving person, Glo Wilson, with her initials on both the shirts and bags.
Arriving at Stallion Mountain Golf course Friday morning, everything was as usual. However, after hitting some balls on the range, Freck felt he needed some water and asked Vinny to take him to the club house. It was obvious to Vinny that Freck needed more than water. Scooter and Garon got involved and all 3 were concerned/scared for Freck’s health and called 911. Thank God for those 3, starting with Vinny who got the ball rolling to get Freck the help he needed. Our buddy Freck took an ambulance to a local hospital and fortunately had a full recovery from a mini-stroke and was able to join the guys on Sunday.
There was still a competition for a Veggy Open Championship, although the vibe was way different. We all had Freck on our minds and the scores showed it. Red won with a 96, followed by Scotty’s 101, Wally’s 103, Derfy & Tommy’s 106, Hazzy’s 109, Vinny’s 111, Travy’s 115, Gilly’s 123 and Da Big Guy’s 134. Red is approaching Scooter’s Henrick’s Cup victory mark, Wally won the Senior Division.
Da Big Guy had an issue with an outdated cigar and left his mark on the course.
We went to the Veteran Leatherneck bar to reunite with owner Ghost and honor our veterans. We bought Veterans drinks, gave out military gifts and had good conversation with those who served our country. Da Big Guy was our leader as he made every Veggy member proud.
For dinner, we enjoyed a short walk to Dick’s Last Resort, thinking/toasting to Freck. Funny hats, an enjoyable time together.
Saturday morning, the pair’s golf tourney had 6 two-somes, all ready to compete. There were some funky rules like 1 club, 1 handed swing, scramble, alternative shot etc. The WIU connection of roomies Travy/Wally won with a 138, followed by Scotty/Joe with 142, Gilly/Scooter with 143, Tommy/Derf with 144, Vinny/Hazzy with 154 and Red/Narke with 157.
2 of the 3 vehicles went back to The Plaza, 1 vehicle stopped at The Stage Door for $3 hot dogs/beers. Veggy presentation awards were given in Gilly’s suite, celebration shots and Wheeling regained dominance over Hoffman in euchre & backgammon! We walked to Hennesy’s for dinner. No Shepherd’s Pie as Freck was still in the hospital, but we all toasted a shot of Jameson in honor of our buddy Freck. We stopped at Circa to watch the end of the Cubs game (not good) and a UFC women’s fight. Great sports book! Back to The Plaza at the carousel bar as we watched U2 and Bono perform about 25 yards from us.
There was some success while gaming. Pai Gow straight flush and 4 of a kind cashed Envy for all.
Sunday morning was the Pickleball tourney. Only Vinny, Hazzy, Tommy, Scotty, Narke and Wally were man enough to compete. Hoffman was nowhere to be found! #1 seeds Narke & Wally dominated to win another VO Championship. We watched football in the sports book, including Da Bears suffering another loss. A few members walked to Hog’s N Heifers to experience the crazy atmosphere and enjoy a shot of hog piss!
Monday, only 6 were left, Gilly, Vinny, Freck, Ronny, Wally and Scooter. Unfortunately, Scooter tested positive for Covid and pretty much isolated in his room. Great time in the pool and cabana, thanks to Gilly’s comps. Relaxing day, watched MNF, had lots of pizza to finish the Veggy week!
We all departed Tuesday morning. Oh man, what an up and down Veggy. As always, it was a really good time hanging out with 14 of the finest, some member’s friends for over 50 years. Freck’s health episode was a definite concern for all. Scooter’s Covid also was an issue. Fred’s Covid after Veggy was also a concern.
We’ve all been through various ups and downs throughout our lifetime. That pattern will not change. Also what will not change is the love and support that Veggy members have for one another. So grateful, so thankful, these guys are the best!
Our Veggy motto sunk a little deeper this time. “Life is precious, Spend time with friends while you can.”
Yours in Veggy,
T Wally
